Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Prepare three 9-inch cake pans, lubricating them and adding paper. Beat until the dough is light and feathery, then add the sugar and beat for about 5 more minutes. Add the eggs, 1 at a time, and mix well after each. Add the flour and buttermilk, then again, starting and ending with the flour and mix well after each. Add the vanilla and beat well. Divide between the dishes and prepare for 25-30 minutes until set.

Unmould the pan on a cooling rack and let cool completely. Get ready Southern caramel frosting while the cakes cool, then, at this point, ice the cake.
